Family Connection &
Communities In Schools of Wilkes County, Inc.

is a community-based non-profit organization which works to improve the quality of life for all citizens of Washington-Wilkes by working to reduce barriers and increase positive factors within our county.

> Our History

FC/CIS of Wilkes County, Inc. was originally formed in 1994, through the collaborative efforts of many community leaders. It became a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization in 1996. We are affiliated with the Georgia Family Connection statewide network and also affiliated with Communities In Schools of Georgia, a nationally-based independent nonprofit corporation (see below.)

FC/ CIS of Wilkes County promotes the well-being of Washington-Wilkes children and families, and to that end, over the last few years, our community has seen a reduction in teen pregnancies, fewer adjudicated youth, improved standardized test scores, improved parenting skills, and more children enrolled in Head Start and Pre-K. FC and CIS of Wilkes has received national, state and regional recognition for its outstanding programs and accomplishments, particularly highlighting its neighborhood-based after-school program, A-STAR (After-School Tutorial and Recreation) which operated for 15 years. FC and CIS of Wilkes initiated and received the first successful 21st Century Community Learning Center grant for Wilkes County in 2009-2010 through 2011-2012, with 9 centers operating, 4 school sites, and 5 community sites.
